Medicare Supplement Plan N, explained
Plan N trades small copays for noticeably lower premiums. For healthy retirees who see the doctor a few times a year, it often costs less overall than Plan G.
What Plan N covers — and what it doesn't
| Benefit | Plan N pays |
|---|---|
| Part A coinsurance & hospital costs | 100% |
| Part B coinsurance | 100% — except up to $20 per office visit and up to $50 per ER visit (waived if admitted) |
| Part B excess charges | Not covered — the provider may bill up to 15% over Medicare's approved amount |
| Skilled nursing coinsurance | 100% |
| Part A hospice coinsurance | 100% |
| Foreign travel emergency | 80% up to plan limits (confirm current limits) |
Who Plan N fits
- You're generally healthy and see the doctor a handful of times a year
- You want supplement freedom — any provider that accepts Medicare — at a lower premium
- Your providers don't charge Part B excess charges (we check this with you)
When Plan G is the better call
- You expect frequent office visits, therapy or specialist care
- Your doctors charge Part B excess charges (common enough in Florida that it matters)
- You want zero cost-sharing after the Part B deductible — full predictability
Same rules as every Medigap plan
Plan N is federally standardized — a Plan N from carrier A is identical to a Plan N from carrier B except for price. Premiums differ a lot, which is why comparing carriers matters more than comparing letters. Also note: Medigap plans don't include prescription drug coverage; add a separate Part D plan.
