Medicare Supplement Plan G, explained
The most-chosen Medigap plan in the country — and for good reason. Here is exactly what it covers, what it costs, and when it's the right call.
What Plan G covers
| Benefit | Plan G pays |
|---|---|
| Part A coinsurance & hospital costs | 100% (up to 365 days after Medicare benefits are used up) |
| Part B coinsurance / copayment | 100% — after you pay the annual Part B deductible |
| Blood (first 3 pints) | 100% |
| Part A hospice care coinsurance | 100% |
| Skilled nursing facility coinsurance | 100% |
| Part B excess charges | 100% — a real factor in Florida, where some providers charge them |
| Foreign travel emergency | 80% up to plan limits ($50,000 lifetime, with a $250 deductible — confirm current limits) |
What it does not cover: prescription drugs (add a separate Part D plan), dental, vision, hearing, and long-term care.
The one cost to know: the Part B deductible
Plan G covers everything Original Medicare leaves behind except the annual Part B deductible, which you pay once per year at the start of care. After that, covered services cost you nothing for the rest of the year. For many Southwest Florida retirees who see doctors regularly, that predictability is worth the monthly premium.
In Florida, Part B excess charges matter: some providers bill 15% above Medicare's approved amount. Plan G pays excess charges in full — Plan N does not.
Plan G vs. Plan N — quick compare
| Plan G | Plan N | |
|---|---|---|
| Part B coinsurance | 100% (after deductible) | 100% except up to $20 office visits / $50 ER copays |
| Part B excess charges | Covered | Not covered |
| Monthly premium | Higher | Typically 15–25% lower |
| Ambulance coinsurance | Covered in full | Covered except small copay (up to $20) |
