What is MASA coverage — and why Florida families ask about it

By Alston Ebron, Licensed Agent · March 27, 2026

Florida coastline scene representing emergency medical transport considerations for coastal residents

MASA (Medical Air Services Association) pioneered a simple idea: an annual membership that covers the cost of emergency medical transport — especially air ambulance — that health insurance leaves behind. XactInsure presents MASA at free seminars across Southwest Florida four to five days a week, and it is one of the most-asked-about topics we see.

What the coverage actually is

It is a membership agreement, not insurance. It promises to cover transport costs per its contract — typically emergency air and ground transport to an appropriate facility. It does not pay hospital bills, doctor bills, or prescriptions.

Why the gap matters in Florida

  • Southwest Florida is geographically spread out — the nearest appropriate hospital can be a long helicopter ride from barrier islands, inland communities or rural Charlotte County.
  • Air ambulance operators have historically been able to bill large amounts beyond what Medicare approves.
  • Medicare pays 80% of the approved amount after the Part B deductible — leaving coinsurance and, in some cases, large unapproved balances.

Who we honestly tell it may not fit

If you already carry Medigap Plan G, the 20% coinsurance on approved transports is already covered — and for many households that closes the practical gap. The seminar and our free review will tell you when that is the case. For households on Original Medicare alone, or those who want the unapproved balance addressed as well, the membership earns its place at the table.
