Short answer

Is MASA Emergency Shield Plus worth it?

It depends on what already covers your emergency transport. For a household on Original Medicare with no supplement, a transport membership can answer a real gap. For a household already on Medigap Plan G, the same gap is usually covered — and we will tell you that before anything else.

The gap people are actually asking about

Medicare Part B covers medically necessary ambulance transport and pays 80% of the approved amount after the Part B deductible. Two limits matter here: the 20% you still owe, and the fact that the approved amount is frequently lower than what an air ambulance bills. Air transport in Florida routinely runs into five figures, so the difference between the bill and the approved amount is where families get hurt.

  • On Original Medicare alone: you carry both the 20% and any gap between the charge and the approved amount.
  • On Medigap Plan G or N: the 20% Medicare-approved coinsurance is covered — G in full, N minus a small copay.
  • On Medicare Advantage: transport is covered inside the plan network, so out-of-network air transport is the case worth checking on your Evidence of Coverage.

When a membership tends to make sense

  • You keep Original Medicare without a Medigap supplement and want the non-approved transport balance addressed by contract.
  • Your household is far from a trauma centre, or travels between states and Florida through the year.
  • You have read the member agreement — who pays, what is excluded, how a refund works — and the terms fit your situation.

When Medigap is the better first answer

  • Your main exposure is the 20% coinsurance on Medicare-approved transports, which Plan G covers entirely.
  • You want that same coinsurance covered for every other Part A and B service, not transport alone.
  • You would rather rely on standardized, regulated coverage than on contract terms.

MASA is a membership program, not insurance, and pricing is never the subject of our public presentations — if you want the numbers for your household, they are covered one-on-one by phone or in person.
