Everything Lee, Collier, and Charlotte County seniors need to know about Medicare supplements, Plan G, MASA emergency transport, and when to enroll — in plain English.

Medicare Part A covers hospital inpatient care. Medicare Part B covers outpatient services, doctor visits, and preventive care. Together they cover approximately 80% of Medicare-approved costs — leaving you responsible for the remaining 20% with no annual out-of-pocket maximum.
That 20% doesn't sound alarming until you do the math. A 5-day hospital stay in Fort Myers can cost $40,000. Your 20% share: $8,000. A major surgery: $100,000+ total, $20,000+ out of pocket. Without a supplement, there's no ceiling on what you can owe.
Part A Deductible: $1,676 per benefit period in 2026 — and you can owe this multiple times per year if you're hospitalized more than once.
Part B Coinsurance: 20% of all outpatient costs after your $240 deductible. Chemotherapy, dialysis, specialist visits — all subject to 20% with no cap.
Skilled Nursing Coinsurance: After day 20, you pay $209.50/day out of pocket through day 100.
Air Ambulance: Medicare covers 80% if deemed medically necessary — but the average Florida air ambulance bill is $30,000–$50,000. Your 20% could be $10,000 or more.
Without a Medicare Supplement, you have unlimited financial exposure. One serious health event — a car accident on I-75, a stroke, a hurricane evacuation injury — could cost you everything you've saved.
This is the most important decision you'll make at 65. The marketing for Medicare Advantage is aggressive — here's what the TV commercials don't tell you.
For most Southwest Florida seniors — especially those who travel, snowbird, or want the freedom to see any specialist — Medicare Supplement is the smarter long-term choice. The lower premium of Advantage looks attractive until you actually need significant care.
Plan G is the gold standard for Medicare supplement coverage in Florida — and for good reason. Here's exactly what it covers and why it's the top choice for Lee, Collier, and Charlotte County seniors.
Medicare Plan G covers everything that Original Medicare doesn't — with one exception: the Part B deductible ($240/year in 2026). That's it. Everything else is covered:
Premiums vary by age, gender, tobacco use, and carrier. In Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties, typical Plan G premiums for a 65-year-old range from $110–$185/month. The benefits are identical regardless of carrier — only the price differs. That's why comparing carriers matters, and why we do that comparison for you at no charge.
If you're healthy, active, and don't visit the doctor frequently, Plan N can save you $30–$60/month in premiums while still providing excellent protection.
Plan N covers most of the same gaps as Plan G with two differences: you pay up to a $20 copay for office visits and up to a $50 copay for emergency room visits (waived if admitted). It does not cover Part B excess charges, which affects a small minority of Medicare situations.
For the typical healthy senior in Southwest Florida making 8–12 doctor visits per year, Plan N's copays often cost less annually than the premium difference between Plan N and Plan G. Run the numbers with your XactInsure advisor before deciding.

Even with the best Medicare Supplement, there's one coverage gap that catches Southwest Florida seniors completely off guard: emergency medical transport.
Florida has one of the highest rates of air ambulance use in the country — driven by geography, an aging population, and frequent weather and traffic emergencies. Medicare covers 80% of air ambulance costs when deemed medically necessary. The average bill: $30,000–$50,000.
Most Medigap plans (including Plan G) do not cover the Medicare air ambulance coinsurance. That means your 20% exposure is $6,000–$10,000 out of pocket for a single helicopter flight.
MASA (Medical Air Services Association) is a membership — not insurance — that covers 100% of what Medicare doesn't pay for emergency medical transport:
For Southwest Florida seniors living near the coast, on barrier islands, or in areas far from trauma centers, MASA membership is essential coverage that complements — not replaces — your Medicare Supplement.
Final expense (whole life) insurance is simple, affordable, and one of the most loving financial decisions a senior can make for their family.
Final expense insurance covers funeral costs, burial expenses, and any remaining medical bills — so your family isn't left scrambling for money during the worst week of their lives. Average funeral costs in Southwest Florida run $8,000–$15,000.
Key features: No medical exam required. Premiums are guaranteed to never increase. Benefits never decrease. Coverage is typically available up to age 85. Most policies in the $10,000–$25,000 range cost $40–$100/month depending on age.
The single most costly Medicare mistake is missing your enrollment window. Here's what every Southwest Florida senior needs to know.
When you turn 65 AND enroll in Medicare Part B, a 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins automatically. During this window, every insurance company is required by law to sell you any Medigap plan they offer — at the same price as a healthy person — regardless of your health history.
After this window closes, companies can use medical underwriting: they can deny your application or charge significantly higher premiums based on pre-existing conditions. Diabetes, heart disease, cancer history — all can disqualify you or price you out of coverage.
Bottom line: Apply for your Medigap supplement during this window. Don't wait. Don't assume you can switch later.
Initial Enrollment Period: 7 months centered around your 65th birthday (3 months before, birthday month, 3 months after).
Medigap Open Enrollment: 6 months starting when you're both 65+ AND enrolled in Part B.
Annual Election Period (AEP): Oct 15–Dec 7 each year for Medicare Advantage and Part D changes.
The most important thing to understand: Medigap plan benefits are standardized by the federal government. A Plan G from Carrier A covers exactly the same things as Plan G from Carrier B. The only difference is price — and price varies significantly.
DOES matter: Monthly premium, rate increase history, carrier financial strength (AM Best rating), household discounts, electronic funds transfer discounts.
DOESN'T matter: The plan letter (benefits are federally standardized). Brand recognition. What your neighbor chose. The $0 premium Medicare Advantage commercial you saw on TV.
At XactInsure, we run a live comparison across every carrier available in Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties and show you the actual premium spread — often $30–$60/month difference for identical coverage. Over a decade, that's $3,600–$7,200 in savings.
We do things differently. Our seminars are about education, not sales. Here's what happens when you attend one.
XactInsure holds Medicare education seminars at restaurants and community centers across Southwest Florida — Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Naples, Port Charlotte, and surrounding areas. Attendance is completely free and includes a complimentary meal.
Our seminar model is education-first. We walk you through Medicare in plain English, cover the gaps, explain your options, and answer every question in the room — including the ones you were afraid to ask. You leave informed, not sold. If you want to work with us after, great. If not, you still leave with knowledge that protects you.
Our seminar close rate is intentionally low — around 10%. That's not a failure; it's proof that we're not pressuring anyone. The seniors who do become clients do so because they're ready and informed.
